Newbury Park Re-cap!

Our 8th grade boys played pretty well most of the weekend lead by PG  Tyler Hildreth. who showed why he’s going to be a outstanding high school player. Starting with the big guys, he got everyone involved in the game which produced easier looks for himself.

They captured their first two wins rather convincingly with outstanding defensive play which lead to fast break opportunities. Tyler Weakland found his shot which had been missing for a while, hitting jumpers from all over the court. Their third game provided much stiffer competition, which was a good thing, but in the end the boys got it done.

On our way to the championship game, I think we might have been a little over confident or under just estimated our opponent. Both teams were in the big one for a reason and I feel we thought they would just fold up because we pushed them around a little.

We often talk about “killer instinct”, something we haven’t developed just yet, but we will. We started out fast with our press which lead to some turnovers and easy baskets for the good guys. As the game progressed we stopped doing what got us the lead and the Vikings played a little harder from the 12 minute mark to the 9 minute mark which gave them a 10 point lead which we never recovered from. The players seemed a little down after the game but you can  learn a lesson from a loss which I think we did.

The 7th grade team had a pretty rough weekend but there were some bright spots, Lil Mike showed some flashes of a true scorer and a leader. We expect that he will continue to move forward. Michael Doshi showed that he can compete when he wants. He answered a personal challenge from the coaches with a new sense of I can and will. We all need to put in some work Monday thru Friday and you will improve your game which will make our team better.
